Why use biochar in bedding?

  • Ammonia reduction: lowers odour, lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved animal welfare.

  • Improved animal health and resilience: supports better condition and creates a cleaner housing environment.

  • Improved manure value: biochar-enriched farm yard manure holds nutrients and boosts soil carbon when spread. As it feeds the soil biome the nutrient cycle improves resulting in increased dry matter yield and quality in herbal lays resulting in improved feed conversion rates.

  • Better bedding life: keeps bedding drier and more hygienic.

Proven on-farm the same approach has delivered outstanding results in cattle housing on the FM & SJ Jones & Son farm where they have been using biochar enriched FYM since 2021Biochar captures nitrogen from manure in a stable, non-leaching form, which is only released slowly by aerobic, mineralising bacteria in the soil. This avoids the ‘nitrogen-shock’ effect seen with synthetic fertilisers, and supports stronger symbiosis with clover and legumes, increasing natural nitrogen fixation throughout the growing season.
